Author Eva Jean Bowman wrote this book to empower Native and non-Native children and to “help our children understand their Mohican history and not forget our Native heroes.” In this historical nonfiction illustrated by the students of Bowler Elementary School, Bowman tells the story of Chief Daniel Ninham and his Stockbridge warriors who fought and died in the Revolutionary War.

The book explains how the Stockbridge-Munsee lost their homeland in New York and were driven to the Wisconsin area. Bowman, a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe herself, writes that her grandfather and great uncle were among the Stockbridge-Munsee people who settled in Wisconsin.

Chief Daniel Ninham is a war chief who died protecting his tribal land. But, because tribal members were removed from their homeland, the history of this war hero was almost forgotten. Bowman remembers and honors this hero in this story. In addition to the hand-drawn illustrations of elementary school children, Bowman contextualizes this historical nonfiction with photographs of the area of New York referenced in the story.

Bowler School District in Bowler, Wisconsin, educates many young people from the reservation of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans. The elementary school’s enrollment is approximately thirty-nine percent Native American, most of whom are Stockbridge-Munsee tribal members or descendants.

Eva Jean Bowman began her career in early childhood education by working in the Native American Headstart Program. She earned an associate certificate in Child Development from Winnebago Community College. She has led the Stockbridge-Munsee Headstart Program since 1989.
